Obituary for Bernard Anthony Duffy, Sr.

Bernard Anthony Duffy Sr., peacefully passed in Norfolk, VA in the early hours of September 12, 2018, three months shy of his 95th birthday.

Bernie was born December 12, 1923 in Belfast, Ireland. He was the second oldest of 6 children. His family immigrated to the United States in October 1928, where they settled in Somerville, Massachusetts. Bernie enlisted into the U.S. Navy at age 17 on December 7, 1941 when the U.S. was suddenly attacked by Japanese forces. Bernie reminisced of his enlistment describing the excitement of riding the train out of the South Station in Boston to the Great Lakes training station in Illinois along with a whole train load of his fellow Boston comrades. The war took him to the Philippines, New Guinea, and Australia as part of the 7th fleet Macarthur’s Navy. After 22 years of service and reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander and Captain of the USS Nipmuc ATF 157, Bernie retired in 1964. He then utilized his Veteran’s benefits to complete a Bachelors Degree in History and a Masters Degree in Education at Old Dominion University and Virginia Tech. Bernie taught History in Junior High School, became an Assistant Principal then Principal before joining School Administration. He retired in 1989 from the Norfolk Public School System and then set his sights on building a custom Chesapeake Bay front home in Ocean View.

Throughout his life, Bernie was an exercise guru as a long-distance runner, swimmer, biker and member of the Tidewater Striders. He completed several marathons and at age 62 completed the Iron Man competition in Hawaii. He was full of life and energy, always looking for the next project to complete. His most infamous project was in 1967 where he took a VDOT claimed 1940s home in Ocean View, dismantled it, and re-erected it in Snug Harbor, Hertford N.C. for a family vacation home on the river.

Bernie is preceded in death by his son Jimmy, his wife of 64 years Helen, and his brother Charles. He is survived by his daughters Barbara Dozier and Denise Reinert and son Bernard Duffy Jr., five grandchildren, Christine Early, Megan Early, Scott Dozier, Hannah Duffy, and Sean Duffy and one great grandchild, Benjamin Early.

Bernie loved animals and therefore in lieu of cards and flowers, donations can be made to a local SPCA. A graveside service will be held at the Albert G. Horton, Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk at 2 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2018. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel assisting the family.
