On Thursday afternoon of September 6, 2018, Gary A. King, of Chesapeake, VA, 2 days before his 80th birthday, passed away at Norfolk General Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Gary was a loving brother, husband, awesome father, super Grandfather, nurturing Great Grandfather and devoted friend to many.

Gary was born in Roanoke, Virginia, where his father brought the Dr. Pepper Bottling Plants to Roanoke and Fredericksburg. He was raised in Fredericksburg, Virginia. where he met and married the love of his life. In 1954, they moved to Miami, Florida where they raised their two sons, and in 1976 the family moved back to Virginia settling in Virginia Beach.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Juanita King and his beloved son, Kevin James King. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 64 years, Ruth Anne King, his son, Gary Ray King, Cathy King (late son Kevin’s wife) of Chesapeake, Va.; Brothers, Larry Don King and wife Mary of Jupiter, Fl., Foy Merle King of Virginia Beach, Va., and sister Jacquelyn King of Winter Haven, Fl. Precious grand children, Joshua B. King and wife Helena of Melbourne, Fl., Whitney D. Rothrock and husband Rocky of Chesapeake, Va., Zachary G. King and Ashley Long of Suffolk, Va., Leigha A. King and Rob Laurent of Norfolk, Va., Cheryl Collins and husband Blake, and Kristie Zdenek of Portsmouth, Va. Nine wonderful great grandchildren, Molly, Trevor, Landon, Braden, Austin, Grayson, Jovi, Presley and Madison. Nieces and nephews, F. Dean King, Mark A. King and Todd S. Since 1985, his passion has been being a part of the Khedive Shriners. He was Captain of the Motor Corps in 1991. He was Personal Aide to 4 Potentates and was privileged to travel and promote the philanthropy of helping children through their support and dedication to the Khedive Shriners Children’s Hospitals. He was the Trustee Chairman of Khedive Temple for 7 years, member of, not only the Motor Corps but the Jesters, Chesapeake Shrine Club, Virginia Beach Shrine Club, Teocalli #117 and associate member of a few other units. The Shrine was his second family and he loved them all dearly. Gary had a very generous spirit, always there to lend a helping hand and an encouraging word, never expecting anything in return. His love for life will live on through his family, friends, and others whom he has touched during his bountiful lifetime.

In 2001, A fellow Mason and Shriner, Noble Lloyd Holbrook, donated part of his liver to Gary which gave him 17 more years of life to enjoy his family and friends. We will be forever grateful for Lloyd’s generosity and thoughtfulness.

The family has rescheduled to receive friends at the Khedive Shrine Center, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, Va. on Tuesday, September 18th at 6pm followed by a “Celebration of Life” at 7pm with reception following the service.
