Obituary for Beverly R. Salsberry

Beverly R. Salsberry, 77, of Suffolk, VA, passed away peacefully on Aug. 6, 2018, at DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk, VA.

Throughout her life, she worked various jobs in the medical field. Prior to retirement, she was employed as a Medical Secretary at Portsmouth Orthopedic Associates for nearly 40 years. But it wasn't her work that defined her; it was her love of family.

Born in Roanoke Rapids, NC, she was a fiercely devoted family woman. As a youngster, she spent countless hours at the roller rink where she would eventually meet her prince charming and future husband, Sal. She always appreciated his sense of humor and dry wit and was quick with laughter or an easy smile. She was a "slot machine queen" and enjoyed periodic trips to Atlantic City and Las Vegas. Her parents started a tradition of annual family vacations on the Outer Banks, NC when she was young. Beverly continued that tradition with her children and grandchildren for the rest of her days. She cherished that time with family.

Clothes shopping was an opportunity for Beverly to express her creativity and sense of style. She was thrilled when she was given a granddaughter, Emily, to buy for and spoil. She was enormously proud of her children and grandchildren and wasn't shy in letting others know it.

Beverly was warm, approachable, engaging, a gifted writer and storyteller. She was also trustworthy, intuitive and a confidante to many, in part, because she didn't judge. She was a great friend and saw the possibilities in others. She was the ultimate cheerleader, always encouraging. More than anything, she was kind.

Beverly loved "real milkshakes", York Peppermint Patties, Mentos candies and the Original Whopper.

She answered to many names: Dot, Pokey, Pokey Dot, Bev, Mammy, Bigga Momma, Mentos Momma and Mom.

There will never have been enough paint parties, scratch off tickets, beach trips or games of Taboo. Her family loved her as she did them, and there is peace knowing that all those things are waiting for her, and more.

She was special. She was loved. She made her mark. And she will be missed.

Beverly is survived by her husband of 58 years, Harold W. Salsberry, Jr.; sons Mark Salsberry, Scott Salsberry and his wife Lisa, and "adopted son" Mark McConnell; grandchildren Jason Tureman, Emily, Zachary & Brady Salsberry; brother Jeffrey Roberts and close cousin Nita Matthews. Preceding her in death were parents Robert & Hazel Bauer and brother Rufus Roberts.

The family will welcome visitors at Snellings Funeral Home Chapel, George Washington Hwy., on Tue., Aug. 14, 2018, 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wed., Aug. 15 at 12 p.m. in the Snellings Chapel. Interment will follow at the Albert G.Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
