Obituary for Dr. Paul L.H. Heine

Paul Heine, 75, of Virginia Beach, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 1, 2018.

As the son of the late Paul L. H. Heine and Madeleine Hicks Heine, Paul was born in Illinois but grew up in Lancaster, PA. After earning his doctorate at the University of New Mexico, Paul and his family moved to Virginia Beach in 1972 where he began his career in the physical education department at Old Dominion University. Paul remained at ODU until his retirement in 2005 as the Associate Dean of the College of Education.

Paul was an outstanding soccer player at West Chester State College, now known as West Chester University, and went onto win the 1961 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship against the two time defending champion, Saint Louis Billikens, with a score of 2-0. The West Chester Golden Rams had a perfect 13 – 0 – 0 record throughout the season and were eventually inducted into West Chester University’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.

Paul had many passions in life that included running the Marine Corp Marathon at the age of 47, coaching his grandkids in many sports, working out every day, golfing with cherished friends, traveling extensively with close friends and his beloved wife, Carol, of fifty-five years, and spending as much time possible with his loving family.

Anyone who came in contact with Paul, made a friend for life. He had the rare and unique ability to make a person feel valued and appreciated. He and his wife welcomed all into their home and always remembered to have on hand one’s favorite food or beverage. Anytime the grandchildren were over, Paul would strike up the grill and cook up delicious hamburgers and hot dogs and serve them with a side of humor. That’s because Paul’s most prized possessions were his grandchildren and would do anything for them. Paul will be truly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. We rest in faith that the Lord took him home even though it was way too soon.

Paul is survived by his beautiful wife, Carol Heine; son, Rick Heine, and daughter-in-law, Gaynor, daughter, Jodi Heine; grandchildren, Taylor, Paul, and Dawson Heine; and his sister, Gini Lou Appler and her husband, Ray.

Along with his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his sister, Madeleine Alisa, and his brother, William (Bill) Heine.

The visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 8, 2018, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Princess Anne Chapel, 3445 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23456. Paul’s funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 9,2018, at the same location. Graveside service and reception will immediately follow.
