Obituary for Robert E. Felten

It is with great sadness that the family of Robert E. Felten, LCDR, U.S. Navy Retired, announces his passing on September 30, 2018, at age 102.

Robert was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 24, 1916, to Ernest and Bertha Felten. He was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife of 72 years, Elvie A. Felten and his grandson, Adam Bennett Braut. Robert is survived by his two daughters, Carol Campbell and Janet Braut; three grandchildren, Robin Conner (William), David Braut (Mai), and Paul Braut (Julia); and four great-grandchildren, Caitlin Conner, Jack Conner, Adam Braut, and Ethan Braut.

After graduating from Mt. Morris High School, Mt. Morris, New York in 1935, Robert joined the Navy on Armistice Day, November 11, 1936. His first deployment was aboard the battleship New York for the Coronation Review of the Fleet by King George VI of England. As a commissioned officer who began his career in the enlisted ranks, Robert joined a select group of service members known as Mustangs. He received his naval aviation wings in 1944 and accumulated 3800 military flight hours during his 26-year naval career. Robert was especially proud of his service during the Korean Conflict as a helicopter rescue pilot. He received numerous decorations, medals, commendations, citations, and campaign ribbons, including WWII Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, three Presidential Unit Citations, and two Distinguished Flying Crosses.

Robert began his second career in 1964 as an Interstate Battery distributor for the Hampton Roads region. After retiring, he enjoyed his remaining years among family and friends sharing stories of his remarkable life. Robert loved his country and served her well, but above all he loved his family and his faith in God.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for the love and kindness of the King’s Companions of the King’s Grant Baptist Church, special friends Roy and Anne Mauer, devoted caregivers who called him Dad, and the many friends and neighbors who brightened his days with their visits.
