Robert John "Bobby" Robertson, Jr., M.D., died December 22, 2010, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, where he had practiced as a physician specializing in internal medicine and cardiology for over 40 years.

Born September 26, 1928 and raised in Norfolk, VA, he was a 1946 graduate of Maury High School. He graduated in 1950 from VMI and was a member of the cavalry equestrian, wrestling and lacrosse teams. He attended the University of Virginia where he earned a masters degree in Chemistry. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, followed by a residency and cardiology fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

In 1962 he moved to Virginia Beach, VA and began his medical practice and joined the medical staff of the General Hospital of Virginia Beach, then located at 25th Street and Arctic Avenue. He was instrumental in the establishment and building of Virginia Beach General Hospital at its current location on First Colonial Road, and served as its first president of the medical staff in 1964.

An early advocate of coordinated, effective, efficient emergency care to reduce the severity of injury and save lives, he participated in the establishment of the Tidewater Emergency Medical Service Council in 1974. He served as its first president and remained an active Director for the rest of his life. He served as a Director on the Governor's EMS Advisory Board.

Bobby was also a member of the Virginia Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the Virginia Beach Medical Society. He was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Princess Anne Rotary Club for his medical missionary trip to Haiti. He was a long-time member of Virginia Beach United Methodist Church and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

Bobby had many varied interests, as well as being involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He supported and participated in their equestrian events, and helped establish the Virginia Pony Breeders Association, serving on its first board of directors. He also loved hunting, fishing, sailing, snow skiing, and traveling.

He is predeceased by his parents, Robert John Robertson, Sr. and Martha Blair Armstrong Robertson of Norfolk, VA; and a sister, Jane R. Capshaw. He is survived by his loving wife, June Hand-Decker Robertson, and three children: Reverend Robert John Robertson III and his wife Carolyn of Chesapeake, VA; Anne Randolph Schmudde and husband Eric of Virginia Beach, VA; and Martha Bruce Lazar and husband Mike of San Diego, CA.

He loved and adored his four grandchildren: Michael Thomas Robertson, Katherine Byrd Robertson, Davis Robert Schmudde and Kellam Anne Schmudde. He is also survived by a sister, Blair Willis and husband Ben of Norfolk, VA; a brother, Jeff Robertson and wife Nancy of Rochester, MN; a brother, Forrest Robertson and wife Margaret of Virginia Beach, VA; numerous nieces including his goddaughters Martha Blair Willis FitzGerald and Annie Robertson Rudolph, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the caring and professional staff at Virginia Oncology at SPA and Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital for the excellent care they provided.
