Maynard Elwood Stowe, passed away on September 24, 2012. He was born on Hatteras Island, NC on January 17, 1922, to Nelson and Ursula Stowe.

Preceded in death were his wife, Claudia, of 58 years; and his brother, Myron (Clam); and his sister, Virginia. Remaining are his daughter, Pamela A. Kardon; his son, Maynard, Jr. (Sonny); his grandson, Andy Edelblute; and two great grandchildren, Kaylie Irene and Jacob Parker; and many nieces and nephews; and grand-nieces and grand-nephews; as well as sister-in-law, Edith Oden; and cousin, Lester Balance.

He grew up in Hatteras Village and joined the Navy shortly after high school. During WWII he proudly served at Pearl Harbor decoding enemy messages. He was honorably discharged and awarded a meritorious conduct ribbon from the U.S. Navy Communication and Intelligence Unit. While awaiting discharge in Washington D.C., he met and married Claudia Marshall in 1948 and began a life of total devotion and love to each other. They moved to Chapel Hill, NC where he attended the University of North Carolina, graduating with an AB in 1951 and a LLB in 1953. In addition they began their family there with the birth of their first child, Pamela in 1952.

He began his very successful career in insurance with the Maryland Casualty Co. and later with the George H. Ware Co. where he retired as Executive and Co-partner in 1990.

He was dedicated and very active in the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Norfolk where he participated in many of their charitable events and activities. He was also an avid reader and made weekly trips to the many branches of the excellent Norfolk Public Library System which he truly loved especially the staff at the Pretlow Branch in Ocean View. If interested, please consider making a donation to these two indispensible organizations. He would be very happy that you did.

He passed away doing what he loved to do and was able to do, cutting the grass. Always kind and generous, selfless in thought and action, he will be greatly missed by family and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 1, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Tidewater Chapel of Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 8464 Tidewater Dr., Norfolk, VA 23518.
