Obituary for Michael L. "Smitty" Smith, Sr.

Michael L. “Smitty” Smith, Sr., 65, of Chesapeake, VA, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018.

A Roanoke native, Smitty had practiced funeral service for nearly 36 years. He retired in 2014 as a funeral director and chapel manager with Hollomon-Brown Funeral Homes after 25 years of service. Smitty was a graduate of the Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta where he served as president of his class. He was member and Past President of the Tidewater Funeral Directors' Association and served as the 125th President of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association in 2013-14.

Smitty was a long-time member of Great Bridge United Methodist Church where he sang in the Chancel Choir and the Master’s Men Chorus and served on various committees such as the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Kempsville Masonic Lodge #196 A.F. and A.M., Khedive Temple of the Shrine, Chesapeake Shrine Club, and a member and Past Patron of Westminster Chapter #99 Order of the Eastern Star.

Smitty was preceded in death by his father, Bud Smith. Left to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife of 36 years, Deborah P. Smith; two sons, Rev. Michael L. Smith, II and his wife, Amy, and Geoffrey P. Smith and his wife, Nicole; grandchildren, Tyler and Evie Smith; his mother, Betty Smith; six siblings, Debbie, Steve, Janet, Maggie, Curt and Chris; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will greet friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m. A Service of Worship and Resurrection celebrating Smitty’s home-going will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Great Bridge United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tim Craig officiating. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike’s honor to the Parkinson’s Foundation or the GBUMC Master’s Men Chorus. Condolences may be offered to the family at
