Obituary for Juanita Eubanks Walters

Juanita Eubanks Walters, 93, formerly of Virginia Beach, Virginia, died of natural causes in her home on Hilton Head Island, SC, surrounded by family.

She was born in West Springs, South Carolina, on November 5, 1924. Ms. Eubanks graduated from West Springs High School and then attended nursing school. On January 8, 1945, she married Eugene Walters, formerly CEO of Farm Fresh Supermarkets, at the Camp Croft Chapel in Spartanburg, SC. Shortly thereafter, the young couple moved to the old family farmhouse on the outskirts of Bicknell, IN, where she took under her wing two in-law teenage siblings who were orphaned by the death of their father, Rumold Walters.

Her husband Gene returned to work at Knox County Consolidated Coal in 1945 until their two daughters arrived. Juanita Walters convinced him to take a position as a management trainee with Kroger, and she stood behind him during his 17-year rising star career, across seven cities and three states. She managed the multiple moves, households, budgets, and school enrollments for her young family. She was active in the New Neighbors League, Welcome Wagon, various church groups, Brownies, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and numerous ladies bridge clubs.

In 1968, the family moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia, where Gene joined the small five-store chain of grocery stores that became Farm Fresh Supermarkets. Juanita continued to support her family’s ambitions as Gene’s star rose, working at various department stores to help with tuition payments for her two daughters at Vanderbilt University, Salem College, and George Washington University while continuing to manage the household. She stood by Gene as an active leader for wives in Tidewater Food Dealers, the National Grocers Association, and various other civic groups, and as an active member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church. In 2012, she moved to the Cypress on Hilton Head Island, SC, where she spent the last six years of her life as an active member of the First Presbyterian Church until her health declined.

Juanita Walters loved her family and her home. Together she and Gene created the world of their dreams, one they shared with their children and the larger communities of Farm Fresh, Virginia Beach, and Norfolk. Their home in Virginia Beach, which she designed and decorated, became a popular spot for Garden Club tours but also for joyful get-togethers among family, colleagues, and friends.

Mrs. Walters was known throughout her life for her courage, wit, beauty, boundless energy, and infinite love for Gene, “her two girls”, and then later for her three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She loved Christmas, which became the focus of year-round family planning. She was famous within the family for her generosity, the elegant spread of holiday dinners, and her angel food cake with pink frosting, which she always served on December 26, before her family scattered with plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas in the next year. Juanita Walters will forever be remembered in the hearts of her survivors and many others as a loving wife and mother and a second mom to many literal and figurative orphans, including the devoted caregivers who watched over her during the last four years of her life.

Juanita Walters is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Linda Walters Croker and Thomas Croker of Hilton Head, SC; Barbara Walters Doehrman and Steven Doehrman of Hilton Head, SC; three grandchildren and their spouses, Kelly Croker Hering and Al Hering, Amy Croker Cordier and Alex Cordier, and Tommy and Anne Ashley Croker; eight great-grandchildren; her brother Harold Eubanks, and her sister-in-law, Rose Marie Mitchell.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, August 6, 2018, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, 1264 North Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach, VA. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, in the funeral home chapel followed by burial next to the grave of her deceased husband at Princess Anne Memorial Park, 1110 N. Great Neck Road.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: Thalia Lynn Baptist Church or Tidewater Community College Scholarship Fund. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com
