Obituary for Jennings Ray Bryant, Sr.

Jennings Ray Bryant, Sr., age 90, known to his family and friends as Ray, passed away peacefully June 1, 2018. He was born February 13, 1928, to Arthur and Jane Bryant in Buck, WV. At age 5, the family returned to their home in Buckingham County, VA.

In 1947, Ray joined the Navy and retired in 1970 as a Master Chief Hospital Corpsman. He was extremely proud of his military service and flew the flag each day. In his last months, when not up to doing it himself, he would have health aides assist him with the flag, but it was always out.

After his military service, he worked for a short period as an insurance salesman and an auto mechanic. Falling back on his military training, he eventually went to work at Norfolk General Hospital as a Unit Coordinator and in Decedent Affairs. Upon full retirement, he became a Master Gardener. Having a natural green thumb, he loved to grow vegetables and could often be found pulling weeds from his beloved flowers. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and never missed an opportunity to head to the woods or wet a line.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn (Lynn) Bryant; brothers, Jimmy, Paul, Lee, and Eugene; and sisters, Helen and Della. He is survived by three of his four children, Jennings Ray Bryant, Jr. (63) and wife, Leigh, Linda Bryant Vaders (60) and husband, Dennis, and Mark Eugene Bryant (55) and very significant other, Tammy. His second son, David, died in infancy.

He was the proud grandfather of Mark Jennings Vaders, John Henry Vaders (Lauren), Natalie Rae Killion (Jud), and Jane Marie Bryant (Erik). He was also proud great-grandfather to Audrey Geneva and Sophie Evelyn Vaders, daughters of Mark Jennings Vaders and wife, Nancy.

He was a supportive and caring father, ensuring that his children attended college and assisting with any help that was ever needed. Ray was also a good neighbor and was always willing to lend a hand when needed. Even in his last years, neighbors often commented on how hard he worked on his house and yard.

There will be a viewing at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment and a brief service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Arvonia, VA. In lieu of flowers, please provide donations to the Sentara Hospice House in Virginia Beach, VA.
