Obituary for Col. Roscoe Black, USA (Ret.)

Colonel Roscoe Black, USA, (Retired), 93, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away July 31, 2018.

Born in Bay Harbor, FL, he was the son of the late Hezekia and Mary Black. He served in the United States Army where he received the Purple Heart, three Bronze Stars for combat service, The Army Commendation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and a host of other war commendations as a decorated combat veteran. Roscoe received a BA in Agriculture from Tuskegee Institute and a MA in Education from Hampton University. Prior to attending Tuskegee University, he served in the U. S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Disabled American Veterans, and Veteran of Foreign Wars.

Left to cherish his memory: his wife, Mary Jones Black; son, Michael A. Black (Theresa); daughter, Wanda Black-Pierce (Kevin); son, Charles A. Black and (Cristonna); son, Christopher A. Black; two sisters, Elizabeth Black-Bradley and Lily Carol Black-Williams; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the DAV or VFW. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
